Though only a co-writer and producer, there is a heavy nod to James Wan’s signature style in Annabelle Comes Home. From the use of jump scares (which are well-timed and not overdone) to outstanding cinematography, the movie is filled with classic horror tropes and perfectly executed pacing. All The Conjuring movies are known for drawn-out scenes of suspense, dark atmospheres, and jump scares. Annabelle Comes Home takes this to the next level, capitalizing on slow-burn pacing and intense scenes.
Daniela apologizes to Lorraine, who gives her a comforting message from her father. While babysitting the daughter of Ed and Lorraine Warren, a teenager and her friend unknowingly awaken an evil spirit trapped in a doll. The most terrifying addition to The Conjuring Universe is the Ferryman, a Charon-esque serial killer who places coins over the eyes of his victims and is said to have taken their souls into the underworld. His return to the land of the living is responsible for some of the most jolting moments in the film as his coins create a path to him. Dauberman spends a lot of time building up this character through the Warrens’ case files, and the Ferryman becomes almost as central to Annabelle Comes Home as Annabelle herself.

It’s a gleefully surprising yet typical ending for a horror movie, with ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’ by King Harvest playing as the eerily colourful credits roll, and since the movie is part of larger, shared universe, one could usually expect a hint or two. To be fair though, none of the ‘Annabelle’ movies, nor many of the other movies in the franchise have post credits setting up future films, with most of the world building happening within the films’ runtime. Akin to the other films in the ‘Conjuring’verse, ‘Annabelle Comes Home’ has a ton of call-backs to previous films in the shared horror universe and a lot of stuff that sets up potential future movies.
That night, Annabelle begins releasing other spirits, such as the Ferryman, the Bride, a Feeley Meeley board game, and the Black Shuck. Despite the title, the film isn't really about Annabelle; as she's only one of several cursed objects that have to be overcome. Still, the writers come up with some rather creative and frightening demonic spirits. Yet it holds back on the blood and violence, not really earning its R rating.

We learn more about her struggles as the Warren’s daughter, dealing with bullying and a lack of understanding from her peers. She finds friendship in Mary Ellen, her babysitter, and Mary Ellen’s friend Daniela. The three are the primary characters in the film and must deal with the repercussions of Daniela opening Annabelle’s case and unleashing the evil spirits. Though met with somewhat mixed reviews, Annabelle Comes Home stands out from other entries in the series.
All the three ‘Annabelle’ films up till now, the original, the prequel and now the sequel have all had different casts owing to none of them being direct continuations of the other and set in different times and settings separated by years altogether. In that, one can only expect the common threads in all these movies, Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, and McKenna Grace as Ed, Lorraine and Judy Warren respectively to reprise their roles in the previous films, but only in extended cameos for the former two. ‘Annabelle Comes Home’ does not have a post credits scene for when the film ends with Ed and Lorraine and others gathering to celebrate Judy’s birthday.

This high point of the films makes them all the more enjoyable and adds a new level to the well-known storyline. The ending of the film, the culmination of seven horror movies, is a surprisingly sweet conclusion to this sprawling franchise. Determined to keep Annabelle from wreaking more havoc, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren lock the possessed doll in the artifacts room in their house. In any other horror movie, the two might have been portrayed as teens who were annoyed to be given the task of taking care of the younger Judy. Instead, both came off as though they enjoyed being in her presence and wanted to help her with her problems at school and in her life. By the end, all three felt like truly close friends who would have bonded even if they had not been through the horrific experience that they survived together.
After the doll's case is locked, the disturbances stop and the other spirits return to their slumber. The trio is also reunited with Bob, who has survived the hellhound's attacks. That's not to say Annabelle Comes Home wasn't intense because it certainly was, with its titular doll and ghostly manifestations that included a deadly samurai, a creepy ferryman, and a vicious werewolf.
However, it also featured characters who went against the typical stereotypes seen in other horror movies and gave them arcs that were satisfying and unexpectedly heartwarming. This mix made Annabelle Comes Home feel like a sweet film disguised as a creepy one. One of the spinoff movies in The Conjuring universe -- Annabelle Comes Home -- recently joined the lineup of films available for streaming on HBO Max. The 2019 film distinguished itself from the other Annabelle movies by being the only one that involved the Warren family in its main action.
One year later, in 1972, the Warrens welcome Mary Ellen, who will be in charge of babysitting the couple's daughter, Judy, to their home when they go overnight to investigate another case. At school, Judy sees the spirit of a priest that begins following her. After shopping at her friend's supermarket and talking with her crush, Bob Palmeri, Mary Ellen starts to bake a cake for Judy's birthday. Daniela, who is curious about speaking to the dead after the death of her father, gives a pair of roller skates to Judy as her birthday present and convinces her to play with Mary Ellen outside. While they are away, Daniela tries to get into the artifacts room but finds the room securely locked. The second direction could be a sequel, but set on different lines and centred on different characters with respect to this film, with the Warrens being the only common thread connecting the two.
Annabelle Comes Home was theatrically released in the United States on June 26, 2019, by Warner Bros. It was originally scheduled for release on July 3, 2019, but was later moved up to June 28, and then to June 26. Annabelle Comes Home was released on Digital HD on September 17, 2019, and on Blu-ray and DVD on October 8, 2019. It was released in a May 2022 Blu-ray collection with the other The Conjuring Universe movies. There were absolutely no scares throughout the course of "Annabelle Comes Home" for a seasoned horror veteran such as myself. Still, I have seen the movies, solely because I have had the chance, and because I do enjoy horror movies.
The Warrens function as mature professionals, of course, but the children lack the proper experience or knowledge to fully understand what’s chasing them. The next morning, Ed and Lorraine returns and the trio tell them about their struggles. Eventually Daniela apologizes to Lorraine, but Lorraine knows her ill-advised actions were the result of her wanting to contact her late father. Lorraine tells Daniela about a message she received from him, returning the picture of her father that Daniela had inserted in the bracelet earlier. The two then reunite with the others to join Judy's birthday party celebrations along with Judy's friends. Ed and Lorraine return the next morning, and the girls approach them to recount the eventful night.
